Interoperability Testing Program

EANTC AG together with Light Reading and on behalf of NIA, is happy to publish our test report covering the first industry-wide verification of multi-vendor interoperability of NFVIs (Network function virtualization infrastructure) with VNFs (Virtual Network Function).

Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Cobham, Hitachi, Huawei, IneoQuest Technologies, Juniper Networks, Metaswitch, NetNumber, Netrounds, Procera Networks and Sonus Networks participated in this first public, independent, and transparent NIA test campaign.  The massive efforts of seven weeks of in-depth testing involving a total of 79 contacts confirmed:

  • 25 NFVI-to-VNF combinations were successfully tested, equivalent to 64% pass rate
  • The initial phase of the program covered NFV life-cycle management – on-boarding, instantiating, tearing down and modifying operational parameters of VNFs

“The high pass rate confirms that the participating vendors have already made great progress towards multi-vendor interoperability – a topic of utmost importance to create a viable, open market for service providers to choose best suiting solutions,” said Carsten Rossenhoevel, Managing Director, EANTC. “Our report includes  detailed insight into the state-of-the-art of multi-vendor NFV.”

The full test report plus result matrix can be found on Light Reading.

Future NIA testing phases in 2016 will cover high availability, VNF management and orchestration, fault management and other aspects of the NFV framework.

Phase 1: VNF Interoperability with NFVI

We aim to provide a real world data about interoperability between NFV elements. During the first phase, we have investigated the building blocks: Network Functions Virtualization Infrastructure (NFVI) and Virtual Network Functions (VNF).
